How do you use a hydrolic clutch removal tool for an 89 Ford Ranger?

I am trying to change out the clutch in this vehicle and I can't figure out how to use this tool.

JohnHow do you use a hydrolic clutch removal tool for an 89 Ford Ranger?
Sorry never heard of a clutch removal tool.

Are you talking about changing the transmission clutch?

Remove the slave cylinder.

Remove the transmission.

Unbolt the pressure plate. Take off the pressure plate and clutch disk.

Remove the throwout bearing on the transmission shaft.

Place new throwout bearing on tranny shaft, making sure it's line up properly and engaged with the clutch fork.

Start the screws on the new pressure plate into the flywheel with the new clutch disk sandwiched between them.

Use a line up tool to line up the hole through the pressure plate, clutch disk and into the flywheel.

Try to put the tranny back in without knocking everything you just lined up out of place. If you do move the tranny back out of the way again, cuss it some more, then reallign everything again.

Get the tranny in place and bolt it up.

Reinstall the slave cylinder.

What can I do to give my car some extra power yet not fear the engine blowing up at the track?

I have a 1986 Nissan 300ZX Turbo and would like to run decent times in the 1/4 and 1/8. What can I do to possibly get to 10-12 seconds but NOT turn it into an all out dragster or have to be changing clutches and engines once a year?

Simply put I want speed and a car that can compete but I don't want the car breaking down on me for a new reason every 2 weeks. Alot of guys I know love showing off garage projects that are fast as hell but cost a few hundred a month in parts and almost always a few tows a year.

Here are some stats

114k miles

Fairly new Clutch (2 years old, less than 5,000 miles)

to untrained eye engine seems to run like new

Turbo seems to run fine

New Exhaust (less than 100 miles)

New Rear tires

Suspension seems fine

Electric seems perfect after buying new high end battery and alternator.

Also, I'm not the most educated person when it comes to cars nor have I ever gotten a car past 120mph for more than a few minutes so if unreliable race cars are simply an ugly reality please be honest and tell me, I'll deal with it. What I don't want is to be half a state away and having my engine blow after running the 1/4 2 or 3 times.

Will it cost me much if I learn to do much of this work on my own? I've done little work on this car myself and I'm always surprised how easy it can be with the right instructions. What can I do to give my car some extra power yet not fear the engine blowing up at the track?
If reliability is a concern, I strongly advise against upgrading your car. Running a stock, commercial vehicle at such high speeds constantly does a number on your engine and transmission.

If you just want a little extra HP, I'd suggest a chip upgrade first, then maybe upgrade your turbocharger.

What are the benefits of switching from your standard oil pump to a high performance one.?

Soon I will be changing my clutch kit on my 75 chev. nova. A good time to make this change, however I would like to know if it would be worth the expense. How would my car benefit from such a change. If so, can you recommend a good one for a 75 chev. nova. 250 eng. 4.1. Thanks very much. What are the benefits of switching from your standard oil pump to a high performance one.?
Generally that would be good if you had a high performance engine pushing quite a bit of HP. Since your Nova only has the 6cyl (im not putting it down or anything) it probably wouldnt really be worth the added expense. What are the benefits of switching from your standard oil pump to a high performance one.?
I'm not sure what you are trying to do. Are you trying to soup up your car, a four banger? If I'm not mistaken you have a mechanical oil pump and a mechanical fuel pump. I can't see any benefit in replacing the oil pump unless something is wrong with the present one.
You will gain 50 hp. and 13mpg. with this change. double that if you use slick 50

Shop around and ask friends who they use. You don't need a main dealer. Some garages specialise. Prices can vary between garages by a huge amount. Get quotes.

Car Clutch Question? Audi A4, 1999.?

I live in San Francisco and I have a 1999 Audi A4, manual transmission. The car is in excellent condition or it was until what happened this Friday. I was climbing up a series of hills and I rode the clutch for a little bit. I was in 1st gear and only went as far as the 2nd gear and never really let go of the clutch. What ended up happening is that the clutch over heated and smoke started coming out of the engine. The car started failing, luckily I had made it to the top of the final hill. Now what is happening is that whenever I start driving, the car is slow to get into 1st gear, the clutch does not seem to hold the 1st gear very well. The car itself has 80,000 miles on it and everything works perfectly besides this little issue. So my question is this:

    a. What should I do?

    b. If you have had this experience with an Audi where you had to have the Clutch changed, how much did it cost you?Car Clutch Question? Audi A4, 1999.?
I had the same thing happen to me, but i was stuck in traffic.

Your Clutch is toast, and you probably glazed your flywheel.

You need a new clutch and your flywheel resurfaced.

If go you to the dealer expect to fork over 1k+.

You could prob. get it done elsewhere for 700-800.

    Good Luck

Oh and this is for Quattro, 2wd will be little cheaper.

Or, buy a Sachs clutch kit for $270 and do the work yourself. goodluck.Car Clutch Question? Audi A4, 1999.?
I would have the clutch replaced asap...

I dont know about that particular model, but i have done my own on my cars. By the sounds of it you dont sound like you have any experience to do it yourself so I would find a reputable import repair shop, or take it to the audi Dealer.
well the clutch has no grip/friction plates to grab onto the flywheel to get the power and torque to wheels(assuming u have the AWD A4) now since it is an audi, ur gonna be paying quite a lot for a clutch, and most likely a flywheel as well if thats got some nice burnt marks or scratches on it. basically because u have an audi, ur gonna be paying a lot for the brand of the car, bmws and benzes alike. if u want i can help u find a nice clutch and flywheel if u want me too, i know some sites that provide for ur car
try tapping on the clutch a bit, if it doesnt work it means that your clutch was forced to much or it was uder pressure too much basically your clutch is toast, but it will cost you tons of money to repair
You have glazed the clutch linings -- burned the surface -- and the clutch friction plate is old %26lt;thin%26gt; so it doesn't push as hard against the pressure plate. NEW CLUTCH !!

How do i know my clutch has been correctly replaced by my mechanic?

recently i had my clutch replace i.e. pressure plate, centre plate and the slave cylinder.

i took it to the mechanic and he fixed it as there was a noise coming from the engine when the clutch isnt depressed.

when i put my foot on the clutch and pushed it all the way done, the noise went away.

this is why i decided to get the clutch changed as ive looked online and all the answers to my questions about the noise were to get the clutch replaced.

The clutch was high when i put it in the garage.

after i went to the garage, when i drove out the clutch was Little further down which i thought was normal.

after one day the clutch (bitting point) went to the same height as normal and now the noise is back.

the noise isnt loud but i can hear the difference when i push the clutch down and leave the clutch up.

did the mechanic do the job right? as i think he messed it up somehow.

any advice would be great thank you.How do i know my clutch has been correctly replaced by my mechanic?
Did he replace the ';throw-out'; bearing? I would have thought that's what you paid him to replace and since he had to take the transmission out, he replaced the clutch main components as well. Have another mechanic you trust give his opinion of the noise. How do i know my clutch has been correctly replaced by my mechanic?
What kind of car is it and what year? The sound going away when you push the clutch in tells me that it was not the clutch that is making the noise. I've got a 72 Volkswagen Beetle and I have the exact same problem you have and I know for a fact that it is a bearing in the transmission making the noise. I know this because I was a VW mechanic for 13 years and have seen this problem before. But who knows. It could be something else.
Three areas regularly skipped during clutch replacement are the pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft, clutch fork and throwout bearing. If the flywheel was scored it should have been re-surfaced.

Read your bill and see if these parts were replaced.
One source of a noise that goes away when the clutch is released is a bad input shaft bearing in the transmission.

When you push the clutch pedal, the shaft stops rotating and the noise goes away.

Did you have a mechanic diagnose the problem, or just tell him to replace the clutch?

How to change a mazda miata clutch slave cylinder INSIDE the transmission?

So I have all the symptoms of a bad slave cylinder but it turns out the slave behind my wheel is just fine. I am being told there is another slave INSIDE the transmission - is this true? If so, that is beyond my ability to repair so I'd like to know how much to expect for a repair of this nature and I'd also like links or instructions on how the repair is done.

There are two cylinders on a Miata clutch. The master (on the fire wall) and the slave (down by the clutch bell housing).

So if you have a manual transmission and it is not the slave, then it is either the master or a hydraulic line failure.

How do i fix my clutch? i cant change gears, i try to shift to 1st and it wont budge, any help please?

i was driving on the road 30 -40mph and i try to shift to 3rd gear and i heard those screeching noise like if the rubber got burnt, idk if i miss the gear, but after that i couldnt change gears anymore and got stuck in traffic, does anyone know what the problem could be and how much it would cost to fix it?How do i fix my clutch? i cant change gears, i try to shift to 1st and it wont budge, any help please?
Sounds as though the clutch is bad based on the smell but the real question is if the tranny itself is ok.

With the engine off and NOT using the clutch can the tranny be shifted into/out of all gears?

If so, it may be only a clutch failure.

If not, there's prolly a tranny problem.

Best bet is to get the vehicle to a competent tranny shop.

Haven't a clue to the cost of repairs to an unknown vehicle.

Don't be surprised to find that manual tranny repairs are more expensive than autos...How do i fix my clutch? i cant change gears, i try to shift to 1st and it wont budge, any help please?
Sounds like you may have fried the clutch, especially with the smell you experienced.
Could be clutch and could be stuck between gears, take to a transmission shop and get an estimate to fix. Could be $500 or more.
If it won't shift from one gear to another, it's the tranny, not the clutch. A clutch simply disengages the engine from the transmission.

At least a manual transmission is cheaper to work on than an automatic.
My best bet is that your clutch cable or clutch pedal system whether it be hydralic or not probably failed....I don't think you fried your clutch the screech sound probably occured when you tried to put in in gear with the clutch still engaged......

    good luck

  • Broken Clutch Cable BMW 1987 K100rt?

I am looking for some tips on how to change the clutch cable on 1987 BMW K100RT. The fairings have been removed. Is there a quick and easy way to install the cable without removing the tank? I read that you could use the old cable to thread the new one unfortunately I took the old one out before reading that one.. Any help is appreciated.Broken Clutch Cable BMW 1987 K100rt?
Bite the bullet, remove the tank and do it right.

You might be able to snake it under the tank, but you don't know what adverse affect that can have.

The cable could restrict a critical moving part, touch a hot part of the engine and melt, get stuck during operation because of it getting pinched from a moving part or .....well you get the idea.

Do it right the first time.

How do you change a yamaha blaster clutch?

I put the clutch back in myself but something was wrong, there was no resistance in the clutch handle and it was very loose. I think it might have been the lifter rod thing, I wasn't sure how the heck that went in. Can someone please explain in EXTREME detail the steps to installing the clutch??How do you change a yamaha blaster clutch?
Well your repair manual shows you in step by step photos and goes into extreme detail just how to take it apart and how to put it back together.

The lifter rod thing usually also has a checkball that all need to go in. Hopefully you did not loose the ball. You will also need a torque wrench for torquing down the bolts on the face of the clutch basket.

Adjusting the clutch to change how much acceleration is needed when pulling away?

I dont really know much about cars.

Is it possible to adjust the clutch so that the car accelerates more when you just lift the clutch, without actually using much gas? I drive a Hyundai Getz which starts fairly quickly just by lifting the clutch, but I also drive a Ford Fiesta which requires gas to get started otherwise it's difficult not to stall.

Is it possible to change my Ford Fiesta in a way so that it does not require so much acceleration to start? Do I need to make the biting point higher or something like that?

ThanksAdjusting the clutch to change how much acceleration is needed when pulling away?
Hydraulic clutch. There is no adjusting that can be done.Adjusting the clutch to change how much acceleration is needed when pulling away?
You can try adjusting the clutch rod in to get a better bite, but depending on overall power, gearing, and wear to the clutch disc, this may not help much
Most clutches are self adjusting. When they wear out they start to ';slip';,and require more gas to get moving. The Ford Fiesta sounds like a tune up is required.I would try a dose of carb cleaner-injector cleaner before anything else. And a new air filter, sparkplugs and fuel filter.

since this system is hydraulic and not a cable, you will need to bleed the slave.a mighty vac would work the best for at home.a power bleeder if you have a shop to work at.most clutch kits come with a clutch plate, pressure plate, throw out bearing and pilot bearing/bushing.make sure you have the clutch fork set in the throw out bearing,it should have a spring retainer.1994 camaro 3.4 five speed , How do you adjust the clutch ?
sounds like the cable needs to be adjusted as well as your shifting brackets, unless your are mechanicly inclined take it to a shop cause its going to be a long day. also did you get a new flywheel or atleast have your old one resurfaced cause if not you might end up buying another clutch

That engine has an additional adjuster on the clutch lifter (where the cable attaches at the engine).

    Adjust it.

Fully loosen the clutch cable at the handlebar lever.

Loosen the lock nut at the lifter and turn the adjuster in, until it lightly seats against the push rod.

Back the screw out 1/4 turn and tighten the lock nut.

Tighten the cable at the handlebar lever leaving 4mm of free play.

Free play is the distance the lever can be moved before pulling

    any tension on the cable.

i need to know how often i need to change my clutchHow often do i need to replace my clutch?
If you don't ride (drive with your foot on the clutch) or slip it a lot.... the car should wear out before the clutch will. I have one with 187,000 miles and never changed the clutch and it never gave any problems. Now if you pull a trailer a lot then do expect to change the clutch... but if you pull a heavy load there may be other problems sooner the normal also. How often do i need to replace my clutch?
it varies on different vehicles. if it is a cable operated clutch the bite gets lower and lower until you can't disengage anymore. that is time to replace clutch. i would expect an average car to last 40,000 before replacing clutch but it depends how it has been driven.
It all depends how how much abuse it gets, if u slip the clutch a lot eg instead of applying the hand brake on a hill u keep it in gear and slip the clutch revving the engine slightly so it keeps the car from rolling back ..Unless the clutch is slipping ( when u are trying to pull away in gear and the engine just revs without motion) if it is slipping then u need a new one as its burned out ..

    hope this helps.
Actually, you don't fix things until they become broken!

    ';BRILLIANT';!!!!
you should replace it when you feel it slipping

you will notice it when it starts to take alot longer to get into gear
that depends on how hard you are on them.
whenever it starts making a funny noise, or just wait till it goes out then do it

Should I sell my car and keep my bike?

I have two vehicles; a 1993 Ford Probe GT in great condition with only 57,500 original miles on it. And I just got a 1998 Yamaha FZR600 with 23,400 miles I've had the bike for a little over a week and its off to a bad start it has mechanical problems and my friend dropped it on the left side during a test drive ruining the whole appearance of the whole bike. So now my bike has mechanical and cosmetic issues. But i like motorcycles way more than cars but how would I get by if its raining or snowing? I like my car it has been very dependable for the last two and a half years that I had it, but its behind on maintenance, its going to need brakes, oil change, clutch, struts. I am thinking if I sell my car I would get my beat up bike like new again and I'll have left over money for first month's rent. But I honestly don't want to sell my car but I can't have both I gotta choose one. So what do you all think?car or street bike?Should I sell my car and keep my bike?
Me - I keep my bike, always.

But, I'm in a different situation.

You should dump the problem bike and keep the reliable car.

    For now, at least.

Later, when you don't have to worry about rent (first, last, or otherwise) get yourself another bike.Should I sell my car and keep my bike?
I'd go with the car for sure. It's a whole lot safer, you have more room for people, more room for whatever, and like you said... weather issues. If your car is giving you too much trouble, you could maybe upgrade to a better car with the money you get from selling your bike.
id rather have the bike but it just wont work out because of weather, u gotta have a car
put you bike on hold and get your car fixed and in a month or so once you get your car up to par then you move onto your bike and fix it up.dont sell any of your things because if you wait you can keep them all if you really think about it.
It really depends on where you live. How much snow do you get? Is it raining a lot?

I'd stick with the car. I love bikes but don't forget about when you buy something. It doesn't even have to be big! How will yu get it home without a car?

Also how long have you been riding? I've been riding a few years and I have to say that I've thought about dropping my car and living with just the bike. I even tested it out for a month over the summer last year, leaving the car at home and taking hte bike everywhere. It was really annoying when I had to do errands, a normal 1 hour errand trip that stopped at 3 stores became and ordeal as I had to go home between each stop and couldn't get what i needed every time because I couldnt fit it on the back.

  • How do you change gear smoothly?

I'm learning how to drive but find it really difficult to change gear smoothly. My instructor explains it as a swapping of the feet. So I take my foot off the gas and go down on the clutch, change gear and then take the clutch to the biting point quickly and then go back down on the gas and slowly bring up the rest of the clutch from the biting point. But each time i do this there is a small bump feeling and it annoys me. If i try to do it as a slow swapping of the feet as my instructor explains it seems to take too long and I lose the momentum. First off, there are no clutch plates. Only a clutch plate. Singular. It's a Pulsar and doesn't have multiple clutch plates.

Second, to replace the clutch assembly (pressure plate, disk, pilot bearing), you only need to remove the transmission from the engine. If your mate is a mechanic, he should know how to do this and can show you what he does.

Your best option is to buy a clutch kit for your car. It will come with everything you need, i.e. pressure plate, clutch disk, pilot bearing and alignment tool.

Should be 8-10 bolts holding the pressure plate to the flywheel, and everything else is pretty easy to do.

But, as mentioned earlier, if your trans is slipping out of gear, it could be you have a bad transmission. So, if after you replace your clutch assembly, it still keeps happening, get a different transmission.Replace clutch pads on nissan pulsar n15 1998?
Just need to remove the gearbox only.

You buy a clutch kit, which comes with a clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing.

It's an easy job for a guy who knows cars (mechanic), but too hard for an amateur.

For starters I've been drving manual for 6 years now, so I know how how to drive.

Recently after long drives or a full day of running errands my car will start to shake as I'm feathering my clutch. Only happens in first and sometimes second gear.

Do I need to change my clutch?Clutch Problems? Car vibrates when I feather my clutch?
The clutch, pressure plate assembly is exhibiting the same characteristics as when your disc brakes vibrate when coming to a stop.

The cure is resurfacing your flywheel and replacing the clutch and pressure plate and, while you're in there, might as well toss in a new throw out bearing.Clutch Problems? Car vibrates when I feather my clutch?
yes, and have the flywheel resurface too
i got a brand new clutch like a year ago and that just started happening to me. maybe it just needs to be adjusted/bleed? i cant need a new one. i dont drive that much or put that much strain on it. weird. i'd see what other alternatives there are before just going out and buyin a new one
    yes

Changing the clutch release bearing on a peugeot 306.?

    1.4 Alpine M Reg 1994:

Can anybody out there provide a detailed instruction on how to change the clutch release bearing and what tools are needed. would be much appreciated. thank you.Changing the clutch release bearing on a peugeot 306.?
Wow, gsac, you are full of questions today. But since you like my answers...here goes. Step by step. Changing a clutch on a 306, or any of the TU family of Peugeot engines (205, 106, 306) with an MA 5 or MA 4 gearbox.

NEED TOOLS: socket wrenches, torque wrenches, hex allen/imbus of 8mm. maybe even screwdrivers and hammers, heck...everything a mechanic has!

From off the top of my head...

    1. Remove battery .

    2. Jack up the front end of car one foot off the ground

    3. Drain gearbox oil, find the drain plug (8mm square bar needed).

    4. Disconnect the gear selector rods at rear of gearbox. (two)

    5. Disconnect anything else that seems to be in the way of reaching the starter motor.

    6. Remove starter motor, and of course the red battery cable.

    7. Remove black battery ground wire.

    8. Remove your hat and swear a lot.

    9. disconnect speedometer cable from rear of gearbox.

    10. disconnect clutch cable from top of gearbox.

    11. Support the entire gearbox from below with a jack on 4 wheels. Then remove any connection between gearbox and left-hand motor mount.

    12. Unbolt about 12 bolts that join the gearbox to the engine. Some of them are hard to see and reach with tools and fingers. Lie on your back to see all screws.

    13. I think I remember unbolting the exhaust pipe under the engine, but forget why at the moment.

    14. separate the gearbox from the engine. It does not need to be forced. Check for a bolt you overlooked.

    15. Swear again, cause a difficult thing is about to happen...

    16. Drop the gearbox down below the car. there is only two millimeters to spare in any direction. AAAaaarrrrrrgggg!!

    17. Notice the position of the clutch spring. Remove the 6 bolts progressively, little by little.

    18. Remove the clutch spring (also called pressure plate).

    19. Remove the clutch disc. (also called driven plate)

    20. Remove the throw-out bearing (release / thrust bearing) from the gearbox side, on the shaft.

    21. Take these 3 pieces to the autoparts store and buy the exact size. Give the old pieces to save yourself a ';core charge'; for the used metal.

    22. Put it back together....use a proper size rod to temporarily, perfectly center the plate behind the spring. TORQUE ALL BOLTS to specs.

    23. Put the release bearing on the gearbox shaft. HOLD it firmly in place with some rubber bands. It must not slide out of place for the next steps. Ribber bands can later break away, we don't care. (TAKE A MOMENT to compare the spinning effort of the old bearing compared to the new one. Feel the diff?)

    24. UPwards goes the gearbox. Have a friend help you, it's heavy mate! Position it perfectly. Push the shaft into the engine hole. (I don't remember a gasket at all)

    25. Bolt up all those gearbox bolts, to the proper torque!. I make it sound easy don't I?

    26. Put all that little stuff back on....I'm getting tired now.

    27. New gear oil back in the fill hole (directly behind left tyre). Replace drain plug. Fill until it runs out the edge. Add a new copper ring gasket.

    28. hook up battery, gear linkage, speedo cable....

    29. drink a beer

    30. don't phone me.....

    31. maybe I forgot some little things..have an experienced friend do this with you. I made it sound easy. First time is very hard. Fourth time is easy.Changing the clutch release bearing on a peugeot 306.?
Did you begin this work yourself? I am curious.

its a gearbox out... and it takes us in a garage with ALL the kit a few hours, and we struggle at times... its a rather fiddly job, with lots of associated components to be removed... and rebuilt.

Cost to replace a clutch on a 1996 audi a4 quattro?

The clutch on my Audi is really old. I need to replace it but i want to know how much it costs. one mechanic told me about $1200, is that reasonable? I would like to know if anyone has ever changed the clutch on their Audi. How much did it cost you?

Would it be cheaper to buy the piece separately, then just have a mechanic put it in?

it be nice if people with a similar car to mine would answer thanks bro'sCost to replace a clutch on a 1996 audi a4 quattro?
That is reasonable, consider the fact that the transmission has to be removed from the engine. However, you could purchase the clutch kit to save on parts. It's the labor that bites the wallet.

Hard to change gears my car is Honda prelude stick shift.?

hi, i have recently changed my clutch, and it did not fix the problem.

what might be the reason? before my Honda prelude 1998 use to shift flawlessly! but now, i have to fight with it most of the times to change, it doesn't go in easily!

do you think if i change engine oil, it will fix it? how about transmission oil? please provide some detail to your answer and kinda give me step by step instruction PLZ.

any help would be appreciated!Hard to change gears my car is Honda prelude stick shift.?
I'm assuming you checked the transmission oil? I usually change the fluid when I do the clutch.

No, engine oil has nothing to do with shifting.Hard to change gears my car is Honda prelude stick shift.?
Are you having trouble with the Clutch disengaging it, or are you having problems shifting the transmission from one gear to another? If the clutch is disengaging properly and you are having trouble with the gear changes, it could be your Shift Linkage or Shifter itself. These do not last forever. Another problem could be the Syncronizers in the transmission is it is not going into gears with out rakeing, or grinding.
You need to make adjustments on you clutch cylinder...

They will have a rod going thru the firewall from the clutch pedal....Look at this area, you will see a threaded rod on the back of the clutch pedal, adjust this rod toward the front of the car.

This will push the clutch further away from the pressure plate, making it easier to shift.
your honda may have a hydraulic clutch. it works similar to how the brakes work. you push the pedal, the pedal pushes oil into a cylinder at the clutch which engages the clutch. check the oil level in the clutch oil reservoir. your mechanic should have checked it first.
If the clutch is hydraulic you might need to replace the master cylinder.

remove the belt remove the center bolt carefully, I vice grip the drive plate back off the bolt under the drive plate has shims save them while pulling off the drive watch shims can stick to end of the shaft and inside the drive too. Remove the 1.5';external snap ring pull the pulley off. disconnect the white electrical connector remove the next snap ring holding the magnet coil and it will fall off. Install the new holding coil this has to be lined up so the wire is at the top and may take some one holding it up when you drop the snap ring on. instal the pulley and snap ring drop the new drive plate on with the saved shims and if you have .012'; to .020'; between the drive and pulley it will function properly. I did one last week and today when one arrives I will replace one on a 1997 truck. Nissan Gets almost $360 for the clutch sure you don't want to replace the entire compressor? Some aftermarket compressors will be less costly. 8mm 10 mm 14mm 12mm wrenches sockets and good quality snap ring pliers. No special tools needed. If things are oily under that pulley the compressor is done.

  • I just replaced the clutch on my 1996 Ford F-150. After installing it the clutch will not engage when running.

Before I change the clutch, It was making a loud strange noise. Bad enough that you could not run the AC. Thats how I came up with the clutch problem. The new clutch went in fine and looks to be running true. I tried to add some freon but the system really doesn't want to take any. I did disconnect the high side hose while instaling the clutch and lost quiet a lot of freon. Why want the clutch engage???I just replaced the clutch on my 1996 Ford F-150. After installing it the clutch will not engage when running.
1996 should have R-134 instead of Freon (R-12). There is a pressure switch that will not allow the compressor to turn with low pressure. When you released the refrigerant, the A/C lost pressure and opened the switch circuit.

You need to have the A/C recharged.

You'll probably want to add a little bit of oil to the system (A/C oil, for R-134 I think it's PAG). You'll need to vacuum the system down, many parts stores rent these vacuum pumps. Once the system is evacuated, you'll need to start adding back the refrigerant. There may be a tag under the hood stating the amount it takes.

You should be able to put in at least one to one and a half cans into the system on the suction side. You can then wait and let the system equilize.

Start the pickup turn on the A/C and see if it starts cycling. If so, then continue adding the refrigerant until the proper amount is in the system. You may need to by pass the pressure switch (i.e., jumper the switch to activate the compressor) so the system will start sucking in refrigerant.

There are some R-134 kits that have gauges to indicate pressures within the system, you'll want to check the system to make sure you don't overcharge it.

Or take it to a shop and have it charged up.I just replaced the clutch on my 1996 Ford F-150. After installing it the clutch will not engage when running.
    could be electrical
Depends on how much freon you added back in. When you pulled the hose off, you lost most if not all your freon. One can won't do it. Theres a low pressure cutout switch in most new systems that shuts down the compressor to prevent damage when the freon runs low. Add two more cans and see what happens. It may take a while until the compressor starts running when it senses some pressure. And it will cut in and out as it charges. Also, just for giggles, make sure that the you put the plug back on the clutch. Hey, mistakes happen to the best of us.

And for safety, make sure you hook the can to the LOW pressure side and wear safety glasses. Hook it on the high side and the can will blowup in your hand. Be safe and good luck.
If you removed the hose you lost the system charge. You will need to pull the system into a vacuum for a minimum of 30 mins. and recharge the system with the proper amount of freon. It would also be wise to add oil to the system before charging. The clutch will not engauge if the system pressure is low (low pressure switch on accumulator) and it will not work properly if you just try to charge freon into the system with air and it could even damage the system. You also need to make sure the clutch coil was replaced and the cltch gap is correct.

Look in you owners manual. If nothing there you dont have to change it. Fluid in the clutch system is sealed on some vehicles. You shouldn't have to change fluid except when the clutch or any part of the clutch is repaired. Then it should be flushed. How often do a turbo stick shift need to change transmission fluid, clutch pad / fluid etc? ?
Usually people base on changing Transmission fluid based on how far the vehicle has driven and based on how hard work you put that transmission through. But I think it's about 30K Km to 50K Km for the fluid. It depends on what your manual says.

Your clutch depending if you ride it or you beat the living hell out of it. Could be anywhere from 30K Km to 60Km.

But if you just steer around and you know how to drive stick, you should get something 70K Km if not more.

All depends how you drive. And how you treat it.

Please consult your manual that came with the vehicle. Cause it sounds like its a new vehicle.
check your manual we here at yahoo answers need more info if its a stick shift the fluid in the trans will last at least 60,000 if its an auto again check the manual

Try having it adjusted and change the oil.

On every vehicle, every single time (except once) I have heard ';bad clutch'; the person was dead wrong.

Mechanics included, until they have it apart.I got a honda cbr f4i 2002 and it needs the clutch changed think i burned it out while learning how to ride?
I suppose it's possible, but on a Honda it's highly unlikely that 2hrs of abuse led to it's demise. It had likely been abused long before you got to it!
Well, for one thing you don't say what condition the clutch was in before you started riding. If the bike is already seven years old you have no idea how abused that clutch may or may not have been before you got it.

And yes, if the clutch is already less-than-perfect, if you ride hard or aren't smooth on the clutch -- which you won't be if you're just learning to ride, if you don't fully release the clutch lever while riding, it is possible to burn out a clutch in just two hours.
bikes have wet clutches, it takes ALOT to burn them out, change the oild and take it for a ride, maybe the person who had it before put the wrong kind of oil in, that can affect a bike clutch badly
    possible? sure...

Likely? not unless the clutch was almost toasted before you got it...
I bet the previous owner abused the bike with clutch up wheelies.
Got to agree with the other posters. The amount of clutch slippage that might be caused by a new rider just learning to start off is not nearly enough to toast the clutch. An afternoon of full-throttle starts at the drag strip might leave the clutch a little crispy, but even then, it will usually be okay with an adjustment. Get a dirt bike stuck in the mud and try to power it out while fanning the clutch. That might fry your clutch in short order.

Unless you aren't letting on how much you really abused that clutch, it had to be pretty well gone before you got your hands on it.
Yes it is possible, but to know for sure, pull the inspection cover, and see if there is a burnt smell coming from the clutch pack. If no burnt smell then no burnt clutches(you will know) then follow jacobs advice and check the oil and change it, it could be low which can cause a bit of problems, since like has been posted, the clutches are ';wet'; meaning the oil, fluid, keeps them wet and allows them to engage and disengage smoothly.
You sure it's the clutch burnt out, or the cable needs adjusting?

The cable can be stretched in about 2 hours of riding, but not the clutch.

If the clutch has gone, it's had serious abuse before you sat on it. Unless you were just wheelying for 2 hours on and off.
    see if it will adjust!

Well my clutch cable is busted, I picked up the car and its all covered underneath. The middle plate is welded on to the car, thus I cannot remove that plate. I need details on how to remove it, ThanksHow to change a cable clutch on a 68 volkswagen beetle?
Loomom and William are both correct, but let me add to both of their answers. When you are doing the replacement, it is also a good idea to replace the hook on the clutch pedal while doing the job. The hook will wear out and eventually break. It should onlu cost about $5 or so. Replace it while you are in there with the hole thing taken apart. You will be mad at yourself after all that work only to have to do it again a short time down the road. The hook is held onto the clutch pedal rod with a push pin; just hit it out with a pin or nail. Be sure to grease the hook before installing the cable as you will have direct metal to metal contact. The electrical tape wont stick to grease, but if you wrap it a few times to hold the cable on you wont have any problems. The tape will just pull and break once installed and fall off; no big deal.

Also, when pushing the cable through the tunnel, it may get stuck as it gets to the tranny. There is a flexible tube with a bend in it. If you have a second person, have them push the cable while you climb underneath and wiggle the flex tube. If you do not have a second person you can pull the upper part of the tube out to help the pushing through process. Be sure to put the spacers/washers back in the same place. The spacers put the proper bend in the flex tube. Once the cable is through, reinstall the flex tube.

After a few miles/time of clutch usage, you will need to readjust the cable as it will stretch.

Combine the 3 answers and you shouldn't have any problems.

Have fun.How to change a cable clutch on a 68 volkswagen beetle?
Loomo has the basics, but there are a few land mines in this job. First is the way the clutch cable just hooks on the end of the pedal. To make it stay put for replacement, I used to electric tape it in place. This way the tape fell off after the job was done. The cable had to be pulled tight as the pedal cluster was installed or tape or not the cable would fall off.

Next, you had to hook the clutch cable guide tube with a finger and see if it was still firmly attached to the tunnel.

The flex tube between the body work and the trans had to be undone so the threaded end of the cable would slide through.

Slip on the flex tube, and thread the butterfly nut on the cable after it was speared thru the clutch activator arm sticking out of the trans bell housing. Pump the clutch a few times and re adjust.

There is no need to go under the car. I did some 30 years ago so here it goes (memory?).

Remove the the brake-clutch pedal assembly(2 bolts) and the cable will come out. Install new cable with grease on it through the tube and reattach to pedal assm. Then fish the threaded end through the clutch fork lever on the bellhousing.

Do not tighten the lock nut untill you press down the pedal a few times to get the proper freeplay.

    How to change a clutch?

The procedures are fairly similar but vary some for different cars. Basically you support the engine, remove the transmission, bell housing and clutch plate. Then you inspect the flywheel to determine if it needs work. If so you remove it and have it surfaced. You then replace the flywheel, the pilot bearing, throw out bearing, clutch disk, Pressure plate, bell housing and transmission. That isn't step by step as it varies some from one car to another. You really shouldn't attempt it with out a book and some prior knowledge/expertise.How to change a clutch?
    for real?

Its a pain in the butt.

You need to find a guide for your car (that will give you instructions you can find them at your local auto store averageing about $20-28) and it would be most helpful if you had a lift otherwise you will add about 1.5 hours just from having to go under and out so many times. (on average 3 hours with a full garage to your disposal.)

Pay a professional especially if you don't have anyone to check your work you could do more damage than good.

That檚 a fairly straight forward job. The things to watch out for are, the flywheel, get it checked and find someone with a cup grinder to resurface it. Don檛 let anyone cut it flat.

Check the pilot bearing in the crank, and change it if in doubt. Make sure you have an alignment tool for the disc, make sure the U joints are good, and you should be fine. Oh, and I檓 not sure about an ?7, but some of the Mazda transmission Fords have some rubber seals on top of the transmission in the back that should be sealed, check with a Ford tech.

its a pretty good little job to do,,you need a transmission jack,,or a good floor jack,,and a good place to work on it,,and you will need to take the flywheel and get it re-surfaced before you put a new clutch in it,,otherwise it may burn the new one out also,,i own a repair shop in Tennessee,,and i wont do one without turning the flywheel on it,,otherwise your just wasting your time on it,,and money,,i have to do them ,,and guarantee them,,so i cant afford to be wrong,,when it comes to a job like that,,,you can do it,,but you need the proper tools for the job,,otherwise you would be better off taking it somewhere and having it done,,this way you will get a guarantee with it,,and if it tears back up,,you just take it back to them,,sometimes its better to do it this way,,good luck with it,,i hope this helps.
well not one of those mechanics bothered to mention how freaking hard it is to get the line off of the hydraulic clutch, good luck with this one as i have only had the oppertunity to do one vehicle like this and man what a pain. for some reason ford liked the idea with that set up. but also remember to torque the flywheel down and check the rear main seal on the engine and anything else thats going to be right there when you have it apart

MY CLUTCH WENT OUT SO I AM REPLACING IT. TO SAVE SOME $ IM DOING THE LABOR MYSELF. I HAVE DONE MECANIC WORK BEFORE SO I DO KNOW MY WAY AROUND AN ENGINE. SO IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT REPLACING A CLUTCH PLEASE SEND ME INSTRUCTIONS ON IT STEP BY STEPI need step by step instructions on how to change a clutch on a 1986 Mazda 626 sadan?
Much too complicated to itemize in these forums and almost impossible without the proper tools and a lift.

See www.alldatadiy.com for full instructions though.I need step by step instructions on how to change a clutch on a 1986 Mazda 626 sadan?
    OMG!

If you need instructions - it isn't for you. FWD clutch jobs are a nightmare. Last year I swapped the clutch in an Integra. I had to disconnect just about every bolt there exist on the engine.

On top of that you have to hoist the engine and disconnect the steering knuckle and the CV joint. It wasn't worth the money saved.

If you still want to do it, it is best to get a repair manual (I used Chilton but Hayes and others are about the same).

    Good Luck...
I have to agree with the others, although I like to see people try to do their own work. In the case of an '86 Mazda 626, which I owned in the past and loved, I think it's not worth it.

If you are attached to the car, invest in a good manual for 20 bucks on Ebay.

    Good luck.
Unfortunately, you may spend more money doing it yourself that you would getting it done by a professional. It is not an easy job and requires knowledge and experience. Check around and get some expert prices before you try it.
You should purchase a Haynes or Chilton repair manual for your specific make and model. The steps involved are a little too numerous for this type of forum. A manual can be had for under $20 - with the added benefit that it'll have photos of the steps involved. You can usually pick one up at a local auto parts store.
